What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Welcome to the next post of this blog exploring various worship songs. Today we look at the song What a Friend We Have in Jesus. You can find the video at this link: here
Another old classic worship song that seems to have been around forever. It is a great song that tells of Jesus’ faithfulness and friendship, and reminds us of the privilege and power of prayer. Being able to come to God with all of our griefs, fears and troubles is an incredible privilege. The creator of the Heavens and the earth cares enough about us to let us come to him with these things and he even listens to us!
Verse One reminds us, ‘O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.’ If we live our lives relying on ourselves and not bringing things to God, we end up causing ourselves more pain and carry a lot more stress! If we come to God and hand over our troubles and worries, God can take them from us and offer us peace.
Verse two starts with, ‘Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer.’ Hands up who has faced trials or temptations or trouble? Yep – that’s all of us! We should take great encouragement from knowing that we can come to God for help and support and his strength to help us overcome what we are facing.
Verse three begins with, ‘Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Saviour, still our refuge— take it to the Lord in prayer.’ Have you ever found yourself weary from carrying around all of the stresses and pressures and concerns you have? It gets exhausting after a while. There’s a song by Avicii named Wake Me Up and in that song there is this lyric – I tried carrying the weight of the world, but I’ve only got two hands.’ Which is a really interesting thought. We were not designed to carry around the weight of the world. God’s arms are so much greater than ours! He is able to carry far more burdens than we can.
As we wrap up this post by encouraging you to spend time bringing all of your troubles and concerns to God in prayer. Remember - What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
