Welcome to the second post of this blog exploring various worship songs. Today we look at the old hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness (video link here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNScR2AXZgU)
This is a great song that is a cornerstone of many a hymn book! It serves as a wonderful reminder to us of God’s ever-present faithfulness. Towards the end of his life, the writer of this hymn Thomas Chisholm is quoted as saying: ‘My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.’
Verse one proclaims that ‘there is no shadow of turning with Thee, Thou changest not.’ This is taken straight from Scripture and is based on James 1:17. What it reminds us is that God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (as Hebrews 13:8 also reminds us.)
The chorus makes three wonderful declarations:
Morning by morning new mercies I see – based on Lamentations 3:23 – ‘his mercies begin afresh each morning.’
And all I have needed Thy hand hath provided – God provides everything we need, according to his perfect timing. Sometimes, God doesn’t always provide us with what we want (I’m still waiting on that Ferrari!!), but he will always provide us with what we need.
Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me – God’s faithfulness which he has shown to us is great! He always walks this journey with us, it there when we need him and never abandons us!
Verse two tells us of some of the things God has given us/gives us daily – ‘pardon for sin and a peace that endureth…strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside’ What wonderful things God has done and still does for us! He forgives us our sins; he gives us the strength we need to face today and hope for the days ahead, and there are so many more that we can’t even count!
God is so faithful to us. His love for us amazing. Let us always remember that. Let us also remember that God continues to amazing things for us.
