What Happens When We Die?

I think that just about everyone asks during their lifetime "where do we go after death?" Just about everyone I meet has a different view on this - there are literally hundreds of opinions. Death is something that affects all of us – a common feature in all our lives if you like. And I think in this current society, having been through the last 18 months or so that we have been, people are more aware of their own mortality.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, however, I believe in what the Bible teaches and that is: - “For God loved the world so much, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not die, but have eternal life." This verse is found in John 3:16. It means that if we believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and live according to His ways then we will be citizens of heaven and we have eternal life.

Eternal life sounds to me like a great option, but what does that look like? If we have God in our lives now, then we already have a small taste of what heaven will be like because God is eternal, and we will spend eternity with him. For me, that will be ‘heaven’. A place where there is no pain or suffering, no duress or distress. A truly wonderful place where nothing will be lacking.

The Bible also tells us that is an alternative destination for those who don't follow Jesus. A place that is void of God. A place we know as ‘hell’. A place that is the total opposite to heaven. As much as heaven is “good”, hell will be “bad”. As a kid, I can remember hearing a preacher using the phrase “there is a heaven to gain, and a hell to shun”. And I remember wondering what that meant. Well effectively it means there is the reward of heaven waiting for those who choose it, and the punishment of hell waiting for those who don’t choose Jesus.

And so for me, it is a choice between one or the other when it comes to life after death. As followers of Jesus have the promise of eternity with God, those who don't follow Jesus have an eternity without God.
